PLAN EAST GAINESVILLE

PUBLIC INVOLVEMENT ACTION PLAN

Defining the Community Vision

I.                    Define target audiences and tailor outreach methods accordingly

Several target audiences will be defined as “public”, including residents and property owners within the study area, public agencies, special interest and advocacy groups, the media, and elected and appointed officials.

II.                  Develop the Plan Information Network (PIN)

The network consists of a contact list of key business and community groups that will be involved in the study and identifies a point of contact and means of communication among group members so that project updates and invitations to workshops can be included in the organization’s internal communications.  The network will include community groups, homeowner’s associations, special interest groups and other organizations representing different perspectives in the study area.

III.                Maintain the Plan Resource Center in Gainesville

The resource center will be located within the study area and open at least one day or evening per week; key personnel with local knowledge and experience will staff the office and provide study information to the public throughout the planning process.  The center will display the study area exercises, including documentary videos, community photographs, and concept plans and serve as a meeting place for focus groups and community meetings.

IV.                Initiate the following Public Outreach Methods

The public outreach methods are designed to ensure community involvement and to obtain input that establishes the community vision and helps to formulate plan recommendations.

a.                  Flyers and meeting announcements (to be timed strategically throughout the study process and to supplement the PIN)

b.                  Community church outreach initiatives (flyers and announcements can be distributed in church bulletins)

c.                  Web site/discussion forum

d.                  Survey/brochure (to be produced as a product of a graduate planning student studio project)

e.                  Camera/photography exercise; as part of the visioning process, representative groups from the community including high school students and other residents with different perspectives will take pictures of community elements they would like to preserve and enhance or change

f.                    Press releases/public service announcements/cable access television

g.                  Documentary videos

V.                  Events

The purpose of the focus group discussions, community meetings and the charette is to promote and sustain a meaningful dialogue with the community that furthers the visioning process and influences the final study recommendations.

a.                  Focus Group Discussions (4 held in a study area facility; up to 8 held at the Plan Resource Center)

b.                  Community Meetings (2)

c.                  Charette (1 – three day event)
